Repost of message from Aaron Jarvis tonight:

Heya, kids –

First off, super-huge thanks to all of ya for yer concern and help in the wake of Brian’s smashup. I ain’t gonna lie to ya, it’s been one brutal fucking week, and our good moments are all relative at best. The good news: Brian hasn’t gotten specifically any worse since Monday morning, and indeed, was upgraded by the slightest point on the Glasgow Coma Scale to a “5” today. This is still incredibly bad, and the prognosis is still not good by a long shot; but at this point, we’re seizing on any development even remotely good – or at least, any development not specifically worse. It’s the only way we can even begin to cope.

Anyway, if you haven’t already, please swing on by to what Katie describes as the “cyber prayer wall” for Brian, where you can share thoughts, wishes, and memories (and see photos of hairlines long since forgotten), and, if you’re able, you can donate much-needed cash to Brian’s expenses securely via PayPal. The site to write:

There’s a slew of fundraisers in the offing as well, namely this Tuesday at Taste in College Park (717 W. Smith St, Orlando, FL 32804 – just west of Edgewater Drive; usedta be the ol’ Chapters). This starts around 10, I’m told, and is gonna boast a whole slew o’ local noisemakers, including Eugene & Chodorcoff of the JC’s, Terri Binion, and like it or not, The Mondellos and the Delusionaires, with Winthrop Fist subbing for Brian in the skinster seat (in his official Understudy role as pre-approved by Brian way back when – some of ya saw this configuration at Hukilau a few years back). Yeah, I know I swore I’d never play this burg again after the way y’all blew off the Crucials show a coupla months ago, but duty calls a lot louder than my own spite…

Anyway, please please please make it out, show yer support for this kickin’est of cats, and if you can spare a dime or a prayer, please send either Brian’s way. A world without Cannonball is not one worth livin’ in…

Seeya!

brian maguire

Our hearts are aching for our friend, Brian Maguire. He was in a motorcycle accident late Sunday night and it looks bad. Really bad. He suffered massive head injuries and is in a coma. We just found out early this morning. According to another friend, the only contact he had on him was his mother's address and she passed away a few months ago. Brian had just moved back to town a short time ago, after taking care of his mother through her illness. It's all just so sad. Brian, we love you. Please, please come back to us.

things long forgotten, things unbeknownst

Two people over the last two days have stopped me in my emotional tracks with remembrances and revelations. The remembrance, virtually forgotten or at least blocked out on my behalf, had been gnawing at this person's conscience for the last 25 years. The revelation, involving an event from long, long ago, was at the same time, disturbing and enlightening. I realize this is all very cryptic, but the people, places and events are not important to anyone that might be reading this. What is important is to remember that things that have occurred throughout your life or the lives of generations before you and words that might have been said in the heat of the moment become a part of who we are. Whether we realize (or like) it or not. The remembrance and the revelation gave me deeper insight into how this person became the amazingly strong human being that they are today. And for that matter, who I am.

Unlike most people that tend to cringe when someone drags out their photo albums (or in my case unorganized photo boxes), I LOVE perusing old photos. My favorites usually include some roadside, commercial or interior aspect...with portraits probably being near the bottom of the list. My favorite era is 1940s-1970s, but I find all old photos interesting. Give me a candid 1959 shot of some women wearing aprons and cooking dinner in somebody's Aunt Sally's kitchen and I'm going to drag out the loupe and study every last detail. The cleaning products, the design on the curtains, even the buttons on their shirt dresses! Maybe I'm just easily amused, but I love these captured moments. I have been finding some great photos in the "found photo" category on flickr. Here's one of my favorites. Dig the wall-o-pillows! I want 1 of every item Madge is selling!

Bedazzled

How is it that I've never seen this film before? Peter Cook as George Spiggott (the devil), Dudley Moore as short-order cook Stanley Moon, Barry Humphries (plays Envy to perfection), oh yeah and let's not forget a flawless Raquel Welch as Lilian Lust (albeit played with a HORRIBLY executed southern accent). I was absolutely, well, bedazzled. I could not take my eyes off of the screen. I'm sure Anna Biller had this tucked in the back of her mind when writing/shooting VIVA (still think this should have made it into the Florida Film Festival!) If you aren't familiar with VIVA... check it out lifeofastar.com. But I digress... I see on imdb that BEDAZZLED was remade in 2000 starring, dear god, Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley (she's the devil). I think this is better left unwatched on my part.

It's strange that I ran across this film directed by Stanley Donen just hours after going off one of my e-tangents and reading that he had been romantically involved with Elizabeth Taylor. Two Stanley Donen references in one day. Is it a sign? Probably not, but I'm bored so let's find out a little more about this dude. So I looked him up on imdb and to my surprise he directed some of my favorite films... Funny Face, The Pajama Game, On the Town, Singin' in the Rain and more. I now feel compelled to watch the entire Stanley Donen oeuvre. I just hope Saturn 3 doesn't dissappoint!

Song written by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Performed by "Drimble Wedge & the Vegetation".

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, I'm bedazzled

I don't care
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, I'm bedazzled
So you said
You knock me out
I don't want you
You bust me up
I don't need you
You burn me up
I don't love you
You plug me in
Leave me alone
You switch me on
I'm self-contained
You light me up
Just go away
I'm bedazzled, I'm bedazzled, I'm be-dazzled!

You glimmer
I'm fickle
You glitter
I'm cold
You shimmer
I'm shallow
You drive me wi-i-ild, you drive me wild!
You fill me with inertia

You knock me out
Don't get excited
You bust me up
Save your breath
You burn me up
Cool it
You plug me in
I'm not interested
You switch me on
It's too much effort
You light me up
Don't you ever leave off?
I'm bedazzled, I'm bedazzled, I'm be-dazzled!

I'm not available
